Another World

Notes for Friday Khutbah at Masjid Toronto on April 15, 2005

The khutbah will address the phenomenon of the Internet and World Wide Web, from the specific perspective that it opens up a whole new world for Muslim children.

Many parents, in a bid to ensure that their children are no left behind in teh information age, have provided the opportunity and technoilogy for their children to access the world wide web. Many parents are however are iether not technologically savvy themselves, or they do not have the time or motivation to assess the impact of the internet on their children's behaviour.

This khutbah will look at this phenomenon and explore some stunning revelations of our children's surfing habits, their behavioural patterns, their likes and dislikes which can all be traced back to their use of the internet.

We do not wish to sound alarmist, but Muslim choldren as young as ten have been found intentionally looking at pornigraphic sites; some have created a web presence for themselves using easy to create tools such as Piczo and have the audacity to express themselves in inappropriate language with the naivety that they will not be caught.

The issues exposes a deeper problem withing our society - and one that we must look to deal with sooner rather than later.

stay tuned!
